Events, stuff happen. Sometimes one sees opportunities. On other occasions one wonders. Then there are the days where everything is painful, worrisome, and just ugly! In these moments I find it incredibly difficult to remember the values, priorities, and mission that seemed so important in the quiet stillness of a grey and wet English morning. I am not unique in this regards. Everywhere I look people are struggling to maintain their balance while dealing with the junk and trying to remember the very people they treasure.
It would be easy to make excuses, to talk about what could be, should be, or might. The number of people who hold this option close to their hearts is almost too many to mention. You can easily think of people and even professions falling into this group. If you list those who are lazy, aimless, and driven by self, the names and professions stretch on endlessly.
Ironically, in the mist of all this there are those who stand out. The best tribute I can pay to these rare human beings is the energy, inspiration, and sense of peace I get from being around them. Even when they are miles and continents away just the thought of a shared memory is enough to refocus my day! It was in one of these moments that I realized I was and am experiencing the hand and voice of God. It can be clear if I look beyond the pain and fear.
Jesus said that we “need to know that I have other sheep in addition to those in this pen. I need to gather and bring them, too. They'll also recognize my voice. Then it will be one flock, one Shepherd.” (John 10.16) The key in moving forward versus being stuck in one spot rests in the knowledge, experience really, of being part of a family defined by love, compassion, and mercy.
God gives a priceless gift to each. To those who sustain my life, thanks from the center of all that I am. Standing still is not an option.
