Day 1 of a new venture was an optimistic day laced with dark clouds. Day 2 was a storm that seemed to great delight in taking dark turns at every opportunity. Day 3 has morphed into a day without end. I know I have slept at least three hours in the last forty-eight, but I am not completely sure. Yesterday's whirlwind has gotten worse yet there is a glimmer of light on the horizon. I find myself filled with a hope that I do not completely understand. We could easily find ourselves righting for survival for days, weeks to come! The danger is very real. The outcome is uncertain. Reasons for fear, doubts, and uncertainty are prominently present everywhere I look. There is no reason but from places I cannot see, Hope springs.
I often find myself slipping into pools of uncertainty. The evidence that challenges optimism can be very compelling. I catch myself tripping over legitimate and illusive fears. The weaknesses that create points of extreme vulnerabilities have rarely changed. I continue to trip over old sticks and stones.
In the midst of it all, I find evidence that Hope is alive and well. It is extraordinary to see God use the ordinary events of everyday living as reminders of compassion, acceptance, and mercy. It is compelling to experience trust, faith, and community. It is awe inspiring to see God's artwork played out in the seemingly routine events in the life of a day. I find myself confronted by the reality of an old cry. “'Look! I'm sending my messenger on ahead to clear the way for me. Suddenly, out of the blue, the Leader you've been looking for will enter his Temple-yes, the Messenger of the Covenant, the one you've been waiting for. Look! He's on his way!' A Message from the mouth of God-of-the-Angel-Armies.” (Malachi 3.1)
Today may bring more than its far share of turmoil. You and I may experience the intensity of unexpected squalls. Anything is possible, including hope. We have reasons to hold on. God is truly with us.
