Do you really understand the motives and intent of others? If so, how do you know? Are you sure? If you look in the mirror, do you see your motives and intent? What do others see in you?
Sometimes the obvious isn’t. I thought I had a clear picture of Carli. Whatever I thought I knew, after a weekend seeing her in action in her new home, I am not so sure I have any idea. In many ways this is good because it means that she is growing up and becoming an independent young woman. On the other hand the process is a clear marker of age, gray hair, and the passing of time. As I reflect on our time together I have a whole new appreciation for her motives, intent, and journey. Observations along the way include the following.
Every generation sees life through a new set of glasses. The lenses are uniquely theirs. For those not part of this age the best we can do is to appreciate and respect.
The trauma and pains of yesterday do not necessarily need to repeat themselves in order for the next generation to learn the lessons of life. God continues to be present in new ways. As each learns, the opportunities and challenges will be distinctively theirs.
The desire to share relationships with purpose is universal. Family is a big part but not the only one. The discovery of one’s values and priorities often shapes the relationships close to one’s heart.
In yesterday’s perspective judgment came easy. It was the same in a story of old where the leaders of the day concluded the apparent.
“Some of the Pharisees said, ‘Obviously, this man can't be from God. He doesn't keep the Sabbath.’
Others countered, ‘How can a bad man do miraculous, God-revealing things like this?’” (John 9.16)
We don’t need to have a split in our views today. We can join together in purpose and mission, reveling in our diversity. In these lenses Carli shines bright, not just as a daughter, but also as a friend.
