“I learned God-worship when my pride was shattered. Heart-shattered lives ready for love don’t for a moment escape God’s notice.” Psalm 51.17
There are wide ranges of learning styles, visual, oral, and experiential to name just a few. In my experience people look for students who are engaged in the process, interested in learning, and willing to change beliefs. A positive and enthusiastic approach is optimal. Having energy of any kind is a requirement.
My experience with God echoes David’s life. If I come engaged and interested,
I do learn about God data. I understand the historical facts, the figures of salvation, and my understanding of theology changes. As much as I learn, the downside is my total incomprehension about the meaning of my new knowledge. I learn, know, and apply knowledge that helps me become more disciplined, live healthy, and respect other people. The more I know the easier it is for me to begin to focus on the “I” god. I know about God, I do not know God.
In my life, similar to David’s, understanding who God is happens when my pride is shattered. When everything is a disaster, when my life is in ruins, when my confidence and pride lie in pieces, that’s when I begin the learning process of loving God. Nothing else really works. The good news is that we do not need to shatter our lives to know God. We mess up our lives all the time, for no other reason than we are following the “I” god.
The challenge question comes when we are at our lowest point. When our lives are a mess we can ask God to come in and clean up! If we are serious about it God will work a spring cleaning on our heart that nobody will imagine possible. David experience reflects this, you can see it in his prayers. My own experience reflects this, though I still cling to many pieces of the “I” god.
Do we understand what God is and wants? God’s desire is that we know and love him.
