The fact that children suffer is not unknown. We know this; however, we often blind ourselves to the fact that it is going on because we feel powerless to do something about it. Papers only report the most sensational incidents, yet the tragedies are unfolding all around us. There is something that is even beyond the physical and emotional abuse. The fact is that, for many, life holds no hope in its grasp.
I think that when you see something happening to any young thing; even a dog, you heart immediately goes out to the innocent and unprotected. I drove past a person beating a small young dog mercilessly by the side of the road. Given the duration, I had to wait for a long time at a stop-sign I cannot imagine what this pup could have done to deserve this. It was an act without heart.
It is hard to go by a day without finding out through the news that yet another child is a victim of parental violence, sexual abuse, a physical mugging, drugs, or a random crime. No society is immune. Children are vulnerable in South London walking to school, out with friends in Holland, facing the discipline of society for their mistakes in Brazil, or just living out their lives with families in any village, town, or city in this world. With the trauma comes the reality that often becomes a living tragedy that haunts the child and everyone that touches their lives for years and decades to come.
The fact is that none of us are immune. You and I are children of God’s. We are just as vulnerable, probably more at risk, and face the same challenges as children all around the world. The difference is that most of the time we think we can handle things all on our own! Tragedy will find us sooner or later. Our very lives are at risk!
The only answer is God’s hope and promise.
“The Fear-of-God builds up confidence, and makes the world safe for your children.” (Proverbs 14.26)
