I love the confidence of ignorance. I live in a world of commitment, deadlines, and impossible dreams. People want to know how to make money, more than anyone else does, hopefully, without risk, never a chance of failure in my portfolio, and with absolute certainty. Everyone is looking for a sure thing; something will work in a step by step manner with a high degree of certainty. Oh, I always forget one of the most important elements; achievement in an environment where nobody is certain of anything, risks lurk at every corner, and the very people that are supposed to help you will randomly throw roadblocks in your way!
In this framework you and I are ask to make commitments. Some of the goals that we are being asked to agree too are not terribly important, someone just wants to feel good. The obvious one that springs to mind is the question “Will you be at the party in two weeks?”
The challenge comes when the requests for commitment become more serious.
“Will you be ready to install eighteen works at a new show in twelve weeks?”
“Will the release of the new system go in at the target date in 93 days?”
“Can you complete your review and have your input for these 1,250 items by Monday?
People’s lives are impacted by your answer and mine. I do not believe anyone regularly goes looking for this type of responsibility! There are too many risks, assumptions, and dependencies in any one decision, much less group of them!
Wisdom observes the obvious that we often ignore. “Don’t brashly announce what you’re going to do tomorrow; you don’t know the first thing about tomorrow.” (Proverbs 27.1)
There are things that we do know about tomorrow that can make a difference today. God loves you and me; totally, completely, and without measure. God’s interest in more in my own best interest than anything I can possible be with my self destructive nature. God is looking to my restoration into perfect happiness. In an age of uncertainty, God is real.
