In the Redwoods, assumptions about seeing clearly in all directions often find themselves in the bin of ignorance. Nights are often absolutely clear, free of light pollution, not a cloud to be found in the sky. Add a full moon and walking around is often better than the early morning dawn in the city of your choice. This isn’t to be totally unexpected however mornings often take on a different shape. Clouds come in from the coast, wrapping and snaking themselves around the hills while settling themselves in as if to taunt those who have a fear of small spaces.
I find the experience of the morning unsettling in a good way, but it is different. I’m not sure if I could fully describe the setting if you would willingly buy into my “it is a positive experience” sale. The clouds are low and close, sometimes so low it seems as if you are walking through a Jack-the-Ripper set. Most of the time there is enough head space but if you are looking for clear skies, forget the dream!
Yet in the midst of all this I find the experience reassuring. It is as if I see and experience the reality of being wrapped up in a combination of the Spirit of God and the Beauty of God. Everything is so present that I cannot move without having a sense of God’s presence. I find that I don’t find it constraining, quite the opposite! Divinity’s nurturing envelope comforts and consoles, energizes and brings focus, refreshes and invigorates.
Divinity’s answer to our problems hasn’t been an easy sell. There are clearly differing views, nothing quite clear. “There was a lot of contentious talk about him circulating through the crowds. Some were saying, ‘He's a good man.’ But others said, ‘Not so. He's selling snake oil.’ This kind of talk went on in guarded whispers because of the intimidating Jewish leaders.” (John 7.12, 13)
Divinity offers you and me the opportunity to experience first hand what the morning with God can be. My answer is yes.
