As I checked in with my bicycle at San Francisco Airport I knew there was a chance of a discussion. To charge or not to charge, that was the question. As the agent looked at my ticket I could see his lips forming the request for additional monies. For once, I knew more than the ticket agent did. In fact I had a leg up on the supervisor. At least they checked instead of racing to judgment. The question was one of discovery. Were the facts that I knew going to carry the day?
The bicycle fit into a case like perfectly. Included were my shoes, tools, locks, extra tires, and even a small pump. With the weeks and strap it is even easy to move around. Yet there was no way that this was going to be a standard-check in process! Some airports and airlines have a separate check-in for skies, bicycles and other oversized luggage but not San Francisco US Airways. Given the early hour of the day my body probably screamed conflict and confrontation. I did my best to put on a genuine smile, and quietly but resolutely pressed my case.
In the end the trueness of my words carried the day. Nobody raised his or her voice. Gestures remained within the normal range of conversation. The case and bicycle got onto the conveyor belt to the plane.
I wonder what it would be like if I could be a resolute in sharing everything that I see God doing all around me? It seems as if I am stuck in a pattern of just being like everyone else. If I was open would others see God in action where now they only see the same old patterns? We are free to say and act. The question is simple. Will we?
John noted Jesus’ model and the result. “Here he [Jesus] is out in the open, saying whatever he pleases, and no one is stopping him. Could it be that the rulers know that he is, in fact, the Messiah?” (John 7.26)
