Doing the right things? Working hard? Going out beyond the boundaries to get results? If your answers have even a minute piece of “yes” in them then I am sure you naturally have an expectation that someone somewhere will appreciate what you are doing. Without trying to sound flippant or negative, there are many who are not cheering for your success. While we know there will never be reaction that is positively unanimous, we often hope for a sizable majority or at least one significant “thank you” for what we are trying to accomplish.
Often nothing comes. It is as if nobody cares. In fact the response that we see may tell us that people are not even sure if we are doing the right things!
The impact is devastating on one’s sense of worth. I walked into a friend’s effort on my behalf and found myself right in the middle of a motivational crisis. All the effort put in during the past few weeks, everything brought to the table that is foundational for the future, while helping the end result sits languishing in a pool of selfish indifference. Hopes have been casually toyed with, respect and honor ignored, and personal ambitions idolized at the expense of others.
The story of Jesus records a similar mixed reaction. “Those in the crowd who heard these words were saying, ‘This has to be the Prophet.’ Others said, ‘He is the Messiah!’ But others were saying, ‘The Messiah doesn't come from Galilee, does he? Don't the Scriptures tell us that the Messiah comes from David's line and from Bethlehem, David's village?’ So there was a split in the crowd over him. Some went so far as wanting to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him.” (John 7.40-44)
I cannot change the actions of others. With the Spirit’s help and power I can communicate my awe and appreciation for the priceless gifts, work, and intent others have given and continue to give. The world is a tough place. You and I can be part of its beauty.
