The battle for hearts and minds is on; where we work, play, and rest. I find the challenge in the corporate space especially sharp. The stakes are extremely high. The current positions well entrenched. The history of change and conciliation is, candidly, thin. Every player is looking for the signs of progress, preludes to victory. When they don’t come morale suffers and confidence wanes. If the signs are present then momentum seems to increase with confidence to match.
I find myself battling on two fronts. The first is the principles on which I believe real living rests. In many ways the heart of love as described by proactive compassion, unconditionally acceptance and equality, and mercy before justice is the easy part. The second is simply the confidence to believe that the principles are in themselves the strength on which we rest. It is not by our might or power, it cannot be by our brilliance in strategy and tactics, and for sure it isn’t by out charisma that we are going to win. Winning will only be come through the authenticity of the truth on which we stand.
The truth of this belief is found in history as well as experience today. When those who were conniving to capture Jesus got back together there was a strange conversation that highlights the power of truth.
“When the Temple police reported back to the high priests and Pharisees, who demanded, ‘Why didn't you bring him with you?’ The police answered, ‘Have you heard the way he talks? We've never heard anyone speak like this man.’” (John 7.45, 46)
Truth is powerful. Authentic, love based truth is the most powerful force in the universe because it can change hearts, minds, and even souls. When truth is out in the open we know it. Our minds understand even as we refuse to admit. Our hearts know this to be true even in denial. Our bodies know it because of the uplift in spirit that always accompanies truth.
Today I will walk with this confidence. Truth is our shield and strength.
