Disbelief

The “drain” is a one stop tube connection in London; literally a dedicated line that goes to one point, reverses, and completes the trip.  There is nothing special.  On one end is Waterloo Station, home of the lines connecting London with southwest England and the Eurostar hub, on the other is Bank Station.  Bank is one of the major London City stops.  It is also home of most of the major and virtually every small financial institutions, law firms, and advertising agencies in England and in Europe.  During rush hours it is clogged beyond belief, with little room to move in the queue or on the platform, both eight to ten people wide and deep.

As the pour out of the cars last night everyone was rushing for the stairs.  It was as if nothing could get in their way.  As I headed the group up and around the first corner of stairs we came on an old lady struggling to drag her luggage up the stairs.  There was progress, albeit extraordinary slow and painful.  In the mass I wondered who would help, if anyone.  To my amazement the first and nearest person to her stopped to ask her if he could help.  What transpired during the next ninety seconds was beyond belief.  They or rather she argued as he extended an offer of mercy, grace, and simple kindness.

“I can do it myself.”
“I am getting their on my own.”
“I know it is slow but if I do it this way I will get this to the top.”

To each statement the response was the same.  “I know.  I am happy to help.  Would you like me to?”

How different were those in Jesus day or am I with the Spirit now?  The harsh reality then was that when Jesus spoke “they still didn't get it, didn't realize that he was referring to the Father.”  (John 8.27)  When Divinity reaches out to me I begin to argue, playing out the scene in the Drain again and again.

Question, will my disbelief blind me today?
