How does one convince someone of the impossible? Is there a magical set of words which will change the mindset? Could there be a single act or action to turn the corner on doubt? What about a single interaction or combination of actions?
The problem is real, though it occurs in many different ways for everyone. A child struggles to believe he or she is loved unconditionally even when it is the most important gift the parent(s) want to give. Peers fight the road difficult when he or she tries to work with those with a different agenda. It doesn’t matter which is right or wrong, better or just different, the challenge lies in the problem with belief in what cannot be seen or touched. Even those in love face the challenge of knowing when doubts are creeping in at the corners, trusting when life is overwhelming, and giving each other the space necessary to learn and grow in safe ways.
Everywhere one looks the cornerstone on which things rest is a word we know as belief. Do we believe? Can we believe the impossible? Will we believe what is not? Imagine a scene where you brother has died. Would you believe the following statement? “Your brother will be raised up.” (John 11.23) I would have my doubts!
Imagine a scene where God says the following; “you are my child”, “you are my friend”, “I love you with the full knowledge of your failure past, present, and even future”. Would you believe? Do you?
I wish I had a magic talisman to share with you for the experiential belief. In some ways it is as simple as this and as confusing and difficult. The object is already with you, each of us has it within us. It is the cry, desire, and experience of our heart. Divinity reaches out to each, in every way possible. Each moment is part of the process; opening ourselves up to the joy and the pain, the people around us who are God’s hands, ears, and voice, is a big step.
