Forks

Turning points are odd events.  Sometimes you see them, sometimes you don’t.  The difference rests in how you see the events as you approach the fork in the life’s journey.  The metaphor follows that if you only look straight ahead you will likely miss the signals of the turning point just ahead.  On the other hand, it is equally true that if you spend all your time watching the scenery you will never move.  So, do you watch or work to get ahead?  What are the drivers in achieving the right balance?  Is there anything that one knows for sure in the process?

As I reflect on the conundrum a simple note in Jesus life provides an peak into what happened in one life.  The setup came when “there were some Greeks in town who had come up to worship at the Feast.  They approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee: ‘Sir, we want to see Jesus.  Can you help us?’

Philip went and told Andrew.  Andrew and Philip together told Jesus.  Jesus answered, ‘Time's up.  The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.’”  (John 12.20-23)

There were no leading indicators picked up by Philip or Andrew.  Even if I had been there I doubt that I would have had a clue.  Yet Jesus did.  He saw the event, was ruthless in his assessment, and what came next came quickly.

Lessons I want to remember today include the following.

First, being alert is critical.  No matter how busy, harassed, and confusing life may seem, keep your eyes open!

Second, never assume who or what will be the vehicle for the message.  Metaphorical Greeks delivering messages are just as real, viable, and potent as any traditional vehicle we can imagine.

Third, take time now to reflect, ponder, and consider what could happen in the future.  As hectic as life is, even as likely we are to fail, taking time to be intentional in your choices and actions is mandatory if we want to realize the values we hold closest to our hearts.

Do you see today’s forks?
