Truth is often hard to ignore. While some can twist it for awhile, eventually the real stuff comes to the surface and into the open. This is most and especially true when it comes to the values and priorities each holds close to one’s heart. What is inside is out on display through our actions, choices, and behaviors. We may not consciously express anything with our hearts. However, the steps in our journeys provide others with a wealth of information on the subject. Truth is out on display. Our values are an open book. Our priorities are clear.
As I fought London traffic I wondered about the people trapped in the cars around me. What were they thinking? What kind of music were they listening to or were they sitting in silence? Was some kind of emotion covering their heart at this particular moment?
I must tell you about the gods many held close to their hearts on one particular day in southwest London. Several held onto a god of “Me”. Everything in their lives centered on being first, getting an edge, and having things their way. Common sense, simple courtesies, and logic seemed to be on holiday. There were a few struggling to know who “they” were. Timidity, reluctance to take a decision, and extraordinary slow speeds seem to be their hallmarks. I found several I think would be fun to spend time with and share a meal or two. Great cars, logical courtesy, and active engagement in what was going on around them seemed to be the common threads. It was as if they were alive, aware, and involved in everything remotely in their paths!
As I drove I remembered on of my greatest fears. I am sitting in the judgment. God doesn’t ask me about the sick or the poor. God asks me about the person who once gave me poor service or cut me off driving. “You were their hope Bill. Do you see them here?”
“Whoever looks at me is looking, in fact, at the One who sent me.” (John 12.45)
