Consistency with anything other than self is rare. It is as if most of us have forgotten how regular, discipline, and predictable actions will take us towards our desired results. The good stuff seems to be getting increasingly hard to find. On the other hand self centered narcissistic actions falling under the definition of personal worship of the ego can be found at every turn. It is as if sports figures starting the season forget how important exercise is to being at the top of their game, politicians forget people actually care about the platforms on which they were elected, and individuals willingly abandon principle when gratification is available.
Yet being consistent is one of the greatest challenges in life. Every parent can remember at least one occasion where they were inconsistent with their children and each other. If they forget, children and siblings can recall a moment of inconsistency to remind us just how “human” we are. It is easy to look back and think the old days were better; they weren’t. People of all ages have and do find it difficult to stay on the path of commitment, discipline, and honor.
In the midst of this conundrum there are two simple mantras to guide us in our lives. First, God loves you exactly where and as you are. We are unconditionally accepted and cherished by the Divine. We do not need to worry about failure, it is already history. It is the present which demands our attention.
The second mantra comes in the form of a question. What will we do in this moment? Embedded in this question are others. Will we make a decision base on mercy, love, and acceptance or self? Can we be consistent with our heart’s desire? Will others experience the peace, hope, and sense of belonging we thirst for and cherish?
Jesus’ directive dealt with both points. “If you love me, show it by doing what I've told you.” (John 14.15)
Today’s a clean slate. This moment has yet to be written. Your choice and mine is the result.
