It is easy to forget the assignment. Sports figures think it’s just about winning. The “best” seem to intuitively know it’s about winning, entertainment, and making themselves accessible to the media and fans. Climbing the corporate ladder may appear to be about results. It isn’t. Results help, and on occasions accelerate, but they are not the essential ingredient. What is important comes through knowing the players, understanding the game, and competing according to the rules of the game set by the top players (seniors of the corporation). Even in politics winning isn’t about representing your distinct, doing what is right for the voters, or even taking care of those who are in need, being exploited, or victims of injustice. Politics is defined by getting elected, again and again.
I wonder if I keep forgetting what constitutes winning. I know it isn’t material things. I understand it isn’t about prestige or power. I intuitively believe it doesn’t lie in how others look at you. It all rests in our partnership with the Divine. Whatever that relationship is, it holds the key to how to “win”.
I like winning. I am obsessed by winning. The fact is that “I glorified you [Divinity] on earth by completing down to the last detail what you assigned me to do.” (John 17.4) It is as simple and as complex, difficult, and problematic as that. What are the details? To give mercy, make compassion real and live and walk in love. Do this and live, really, fully, and completely live!
Ironically most don’t get it. Politicians want to turn the subject into an agenda that will get them elected again. Sports figures perceive this as a potential distraction from the real purpose in love – winning. Even the average guy on the street struggle to make the link with the bills to be paid, kids to be cared for, and job to be kept.
This is where we come in. We are the models for how this can and should work! We get to make it real. Our assignment is for today, now.
