One of the greatest ironies in life is the notion of “empowerment”. Many people talk about it. Few succeed. The challenge is on both sides. One doesn’t want to give up control. The other is doubtful of the mantle they have been given to wear. Neither side fully trusts or believes the other! Usually the euphoria of the initial decision slowly degenerates into accusations, gossip, and decisions shaped by fear and doubt.
The recent weekend press highlighted the problems when two politicians who otherwise appear to agree with each other try to trust the other. The roles for each were clear, well understood, and accepted by all involved. The mandate publicly assigned. The priorities were consistent with election promises. Even the urgency of the plan appeared to be thoughtful and shared between the two parties. Progress was underway. Yet the public now believes neither is empowered. Everything is at risk. Nothing is really going to happen!
I am not sure if anything will happen. Maybe the problem is too complex, too wicked for anyone no matter how capable. I do know that unless people are able to work together in a way that everyone knows of the power intuitively there is little chance of success.
I have been empowered by several people at different times in my life. The feeling is extraordinary! I find it difficult to express my sense of appreciation, wonder, and awe at the opportunity I was and am being given. I find myself forgetting the power Divinity continues to give you and me. We hold the keys to peace, happiness, and hope for more people than we can possibly imagine! Even if we could begin to wrap our minds around this thought it is the last step, our personal peace, happiness, and sense of hope that we find confusing.
The prayer of one follower to God highlights the gift; “The same glory you gave me, I gave them, so they'll be as unified and together as we are.” (John 17.22) Everything needed is without our reach. Today is a window for action.
