Straight answers are hard to find. In the past few days I have dealt with car dealers, appliances suppliers, service providers, builders, tire guys, insurance reps, and escrow agents. In the midst of the conversations it is hard to see truth. It is as if straight answers and truth are hiding, toying with our emotions as we search. Who can one believe? Is there anyone telling the truth, or even a variation of it shaded by agendas, goals, or biases? Trusted parties are hard to find. In all the right places they are scarce to non-existent. Even when one discovers a possible source, how can one really trust them? I wonder if I would know I knew something straight or truthful, even if I saw it.
Yet in the midst of all the chaos, mud, and junk, there are those who resonate with truth and honesty. Replacing a tire found me face to face with someone willing to go the extra mile in being honest, even when it went against his pocketbook. Dealing with an escrow agent outside of the normal transaction process found me getting advice when I needed it most and realized it the least. Struggling to get things done in the midst of overcommitted subcontractors gave me the opportunity to walk with someone carry all my stress on his shoulders.
When the question of truth arrives I have come to appreciate that one’s body often knows the answer before the mind comes to grip with the prospect. It is as if one knows instinctively, even when others haven’t given you the inside knowledge. Far too often when try to be analytical about what may or may not be true.
When “Pilate went back into the palace and called for Jesus. He said, ‘Are you the 'King of the Jews'?’
Jesus answered, ‘Are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you this about me?’” (John 18.33, 34)
It was a great question. Was Pilate going with his senses or trusting others with agendas? Today you and I face the same question.
