Fool's Game

Playing the fool isn’t as hard as one might think.  As long as one is willing to be embarrassed, live in open ridicule, and walk on as an idiot, you are set.  The problem most of us have, especially with my “self”, is not in being a consistent dunce.  Rather it is the moments of lunacy that haunt when we least expect it.  Far too often I find myself in a fool’s game, speaking as if I know nothing, acting if I know even less, and abandoning every value, principle, and priority I hold most precious.
 
The process isn’t as hard as one might think.  How many times has a sales person simply ignored your question?  This is often used in combination with the feigned response of total ignorance; careful now, you are up against a person playing the fool’s game.  Remember, in this game both parties can be taking advantage of the other! 
 
This process has existed for ages.  When Jesus was confronted by Pilate, a Roman ruler of the Jews, his simple questions were an attempt to hide his true knowledge and understanding.  Following the sequence;   “Do I look like a Jew?  Your people and your high priests turned you over to me.  What did you do?” (John 18.35)
 
Far too often I find myself playing the fool in order to win the immediate game.  What if I along with others approached life in a very different way, one full of honesty, transparency, and open dialogue?  What would this world be like? 
 
Imagine conversations where both sides were vulnerable.  Consider the possibilities when people look out for your best interests instead of exploiting or taking advantage.  Reflect on a world full of growing, nurturing, and supportive relationships.
 
I know there is risk involved when one steps out of the fool’s game.  This is the battle Divinity invites us to join.  We are given the opportunity, beginning with each dawn, to set out a different game, one many consider new and foolish.  In all begins with accepting who we are and simply being ourselves.
