Life moves far too fast for anyone to fully understand. It would be nice to see, hear, and comprehend everything going on around us, but it is just not going to happen. When we finally get it, or think we do, life has already moved on. In coming back to London I find everything has changed.
If truth be told the city is the same as I left it. What is different is “me”. I am not the same person as I was just a few weeks ago. I find myself hearing and seeing things differently, even as the people close to my heart who live hear see me much as I was. So much has happened – new people, new homes, new relationships combined with stresses from every corner. Yet while the change is within my vision and experience it isn’t within others. They can’t see what I have seen. They can’t hear what I have heard. They can’t imagine what for me is real. Nothing will happen unless I share within the relationships existing between us.
In a moment in history everything changed for Jesus. People of the day assumed that life would continue as they saw it. The sequence followed natural logic. “The Jews, since it was the day of Sabbath preparation, and so the bodies wouldn't stay on the crosses over the Sabbath (it was a high holy day that year), petitioned Pilate that their legs be broken to speed death, and the bodies taken down. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man crucified with Jesus, and then the other. When they got to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn't break his legs.” (John 19.31-33) Jesus had given up his soul yet nobody was yet aware.
We have the opportunity to build relationships with those around us. Unless we do they will never realize what has changed in your life and mine. We ignore their understanding at the risk of having any relationship at all. Today is wide open; invest in what matters.
