There are certain moments in time which demand a record and witness. The event is important enough; the memory must be preserved without any cause for dispute. There are the big moments – weddings, deaths, or elections – as well as the “small” moments which the world doesn’t recognize. Remember the first time you were recognized as being “good” at something? Recall the moment someone picked you as part of their team? Sense your earliest memory of being hugged.
One way to improve the memory is through a “witness”. As I remember, I find everything taking on greater color, texture, and depth when I bring back the memory with the witness of one who was there. Great moments shared with people present gives birth to (re)new friendships, strengthen bonds, and a knowledge of what it is like to walk in harmony with someone, if only for a time. These experiences, especially found in the recalling, are critical to the human journey. This is where we find truly find our “self” and begin to understand just how important we can be in the lives of those around us and to our souls.
The big moments are markers in your life and mine. The small moments define who we are. The combination pulls history together. I would gently suggest the place where we find our greatest sense of self lies in the small moments of life. One prophet writes of a small moment. Its size is only measured by the number of people who recall. It is not a measure of its significance in the lives of the people it touched.
“God told me [Isaiah], ‘Get a big sheet of paper and write in indelible ink, ‘This belongs to Maher-shalal-hash-baz (Spoil-Speeds-Plunder-Hurries).’’ I got two honest men, Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah, to witness the document.” (Isaiah 8.1, 2)
Today we will be a part of “things” great and small. Share and treasure your life at its best. No matter what else is going on, we can create miracles – in the lives of others and in our own.
