I woke up this morning with a sense of wonder. It is as if I know in my bones how ideas are on the march, questions are on the prowl, and values are looking for a home. Conversations reinforce this sense. Relationships and interactions help these feelings find a home. Even the way events and ideas unfold gives birth to the premonition of impending change.
I this spirit I found myself reading a story of old. It told of an army on the move and of the fear which went before the march. “Assyria's on the move: up from Rimmon, on to Aiath, through Migron, with a bivouac at Micmash. They've crossed the pass, set camp at Geba for the night. Ramah trembles with fright. Gibeah of Saul has run off. Cry for help, daughter of Gallim! Listen to her, Laishah! Do something, Anathoth! Madmenah takes to the hills. The people of Gebim flee in panic.” (Isaiah 10.28-31)
I don’t know anything of this time in the world’s history. It has been long lost to the average man on the street, including myself. Yet I find m heart wondering down through the valleys, imaging the scenes, wondering how I would react. In this reflection I find myself grabbling with the enemies of the day – uncertainty in how we will face tomorrow, struggling to see, understand, and know how God fits into today, and dealing with the harsh realities of the positions we find ourselves in.
There is much to fear. At times everything seems overwhelming.
There is even more to hold onto with hope and confidence. We, you and I, are engaged with a God far more powerful, involved, and compassionate than we can imagine! Compassion is supreme. Mercy is a norm. Love is a driving force.
We are a community. We are involved in each others lives. The only question is “how”. In the bright light of a new day I find myself full of hope. Great ideas and people are on the move. Everything can be accomplished. We can make a difference.
