It’s hard to put fear into words. When it hits it is as real, tangible, and powerful as any force I know. Yet as soon as the tide turns and fear subsides, describing what just happened becomes an illusive quest. It is as if the very consuming emotional overload wipes ones memory as it leaves. What is left is a memory, yet somehow the intensity has passed.
A friend is recovering from heart surgery. Clearly the surgery saved his life. The heart valve was on the verge of calcifying into a relic of its former self. The initial period was a model of recovery and hope. Everything progressed ahead of schedule. The surgery took half the time allocated. The hospital stay turned into a celebration of success. One could anticipate a set-back, but none seemed to be on the horizon.
The odd events occurred four days ago. At this point there is no disaster, just the residual taste left from the presence of fear. Several unexplainable movements and recurring lack of grip followed by visits to the emergency room – three hours one day, seven the next, and they still don’t have definitive answers. They know what it isn’t and that is good news. Ah, the joys of the unexplainable in our lives.
There is much you and I do not understand. Life’s twists abound at every corner. However one thinks they are prepared, history shows we had no idea. Regardless of the fortitude and fortress we establish in our lives, the unexplainable strikes our heart and soul without warning. Even with discipline and amour we are vulnerable.
Welcome to the human existence. Yet it doesn’t end with fear. There is more, if we will open ourselves to the mystery beyond. You and I are God’s children. We are loved in our good moments and bad, smart moves and ignorance. In us God resides.
“Yes, he'll banish death forever. And God will wipe the tears from every face. He'll remove every sign of disgrace from his people, wherever they are. Yes! God says so!” (Isaiah 25.8)
