I thought I had everything in hand. I had done the research; checking the critics reviews, reading through patrons thoughtful enough to share their experiences, and even perusing the pictures. The pictures on the web made it look perfect! The potential was there; fresh fish flown in twice a week from Australia and New Zealand, the best local produce, and a creative chef. This was an experience just waiting to happen!
My confidence led me to arrange our meeting for dinner, sight unseen. The facts, approach, and overall knowledge of the area left me free to attack my work project and break free early – simply enjoying what the day was giving. I was free of any worries, uncertainties, or doubts.
As I arrived a few minutes earlier I couldn’t believe my eyes. Even now I’m not sure what relationship exists between reality and my research. Luckily for me there was a familiar restaurant just down the street offering fantastic food and ambiance! A quick walk, conversation, and we had a new booking. As I sent a text message to everyone involved I wondered how much I understood the rest of my life.
Metaphorically, “at the harvest, the delicate herbs and spices, the dill and cumin, are treated delicately. On the other hand, wheat is threshed and milled, but still not endlessly. The farmer knows how to treat each kind of grain. He's learned it all from God-of-the-Angel-Armies, who knows everything about when and how and where.” (Isaiah 28.27-29) I thought I had the knowledge but I merely lived in my imagination.
You and I face a day to day, moment to moment challenge. Are we willing to gently hold onto what we know while letting God open our eyes to something greater? Will we explore the possible? Can we live with what we don’t know?
In the end we had a great evening. I found myself walking home, reflecting on the lesson God offered to me. As a new day dawns the opportunity is here – for you and for me. It’s time to attend God’s school.
