There is a superficial covering to the lives we live. Frequently we don’t want anyone to see what lies below. The shell visible or well hidden. To deny its existence is at the heart of the pride we often wear well. To admit anything otherwise is a risk few are willing to take. We know the fragile state which lies hidden, even to our best friends. We understand the sensitivities to the harsh realities of life, even as those we trust innocently extract a price. We’ve learned, sometimes without anyone intentionally giving us a moment of instruction, to protect what is the essence of our being.
The world is a tough place. In the confrontation between beauty and self there is a reality which transcends our immunity. When bad things happen to us, especially to the relationships which shape our pictures of love, beauty, and awe, our confidence is, will be shaken to its core. “Listen! Tough men weep openly. Peacemaking diplomats are in bitter tears. The roads are empty—not a soul out on the streets. The peace treaty is broken, its conditions violated, its signers reviled.” (Isaiah 33.7, 8)
I understand big men wear big hats. I have a deep well of empathy for women who play the world’s games. I am sensitive to the abuse and exploitation which often comes when we let people inside our shell. In the midst of personal memories and fresh examples of what can happen when those who cannot, should not, be trusted gain entrance, I also hear God’s call to something very different.
God calls us to a naked innocence which can, should, frighten all who hear with their hearts. It is a call of deep spiritual significance; an extended invitation to come, be, and walk with God. It is never frivolous or ill-conceived. The call comes with a promise of wars, turmoil, and difficulties. The lives and hearts of all who are touched by a person responding to this call will be changed-for the better. It is a call to the heart of life and living.
