Business has an ultimate measure of success, profit. Other measures count – market acceptance, share of market, products delivered, trend lines, and number of people employed. However the ultimate measure, and everyone knows this truth, is simply profit. Short term or long, big companies and small, for profit and non-profit, all measure success through the ratio of revenue to expenses. This is the evidence people inside and out look for.
How does one measure God’s success? Given the incidence of divorce, abuse of different forms, and frequency of road rage, one could argue that God hasn’t been very successful. The premise has far too much evidence for one to ignore the impact (or lack of). People have and are asking the difficult questions. “Have any of the gods of any of these countries ever stepped in and saved them, even one of these nations my predecessors destroyed—Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who lived in Telassar? Look around. Do you see anything left of the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, the king of Hena, the king of Ivvah?” (Isaiah 37.12, 13)
In business, there are always at least two parties involved; the company producing the goods or providing the service and the individuals or companies uses the goods or utilizing the service. It takes both to realize success. There may be additional individuals and companies involved; advertising, network companies, and data center service providers all come to mind.
With God, there are always at least three parties involved, God, the communities in which we live, and our self. Communities are. God is. Our choice determines the result.
The community finds the evidence of the god/God of my choosing in choices, decisions, and actions I take. Whatever I might think, those I touch know and experience the model I have built. Today is your opportunity and mine. We deliver God to the community. It is an awesome responsibility and incredible opportunity. Everything is possible! Our communities can have a window into love, compassion, and beauty, us.
