I have a tough time with individuals that enable the dysfunctional behavior of others. I realize I have no idea of their motives. I also understand how my comment labeling behavior as dysfunctional is judgmental and potentially biased. Ironically, the behavior itself is far less disturbing, even though it is, than those who help without accountability for the consequences. Enablers frustrate me; it is as if they vicariously manipulate or encourage others without any link to the consequences. Enablers bring out the righteous indignation within; my emotions bubble over until I bluntly ask (at least within my imagination), can’t you see what you are doing? Enablers reflect the worst possible role in a community; actions without consequences, choices without boundaries, and life separate from the soul.
As vehement as I find myself along the journey, I also see how each, you and me included, enable others. It is a time-honored process. When the prophet confronted the king with God’s words, I am sure it was deeply disturbing for the arrogant and ignorant. “Haven't you gotten the news that I've been behind this all along? This is a longstanding plan of mine and I'm just now making it happen, using you to devastate strong cities, turning them into piles of rubble and leaving their citizens helpless, bewildered, and confused, drooping like unwatered plants, stunted like withered seedlings.” (Isaiah 37.26, 27)
Yet in the deeply disturbing reflection of enablers and the consequences of their actions, I find myself catching a glimpse of Hope. Imagine the following. We enable good instead of evil. We enable compassion instead of justice. We enable love, hope, and confidence instead of fear, doubt, and uncertainty.
If we enable then the only question is “what”. Leadership often talks of creating vision and teamwork. In many ways, the pivot point in leadership rests with enablers. When one feels confident, one models the vision, acts on the vision, and supports the vision. As uncertainty and fear is address by Hope, one is free to run with others.
The opportunity is here, now. Today let’s run wild.
