Perspectives can be scary. As I boarded a plane last night for an eighteen plus hour flight, there was a mechanical problem. Normally I don’t worry about these types of things. I automatically believe the pilot and ground engineers have the right motivation to ensure the safety of the people on board. Last night it was different. The problem was fuel. The pilot wasn’t sure we had enough. We needed a minimum of 160 tons of fuel. By any calculation, this is a lot of fuel! How could they not know how much fuel was on board? How were they going to confirm the amount? What were the risks?
It is personal problem when one is taking the risk of flying to the other side of the globe, literally. I had a choice. Did I trust those in charge? Was I willing to let go of my fear? What, if any, were my options?
Ironically, the same questions apply to our walk with God. Even if I don’t take the time to acknowledge it, I am risking my life by the power I align myself with along the journey. It isn’t just God, god, or nothing. I am going to choose someone or something. One choice I have is simply to choose myself. I can try to do it on my own, trying the god within to emerge and be victorious. If I don’t choose myself, there are a number of gods and God to choose from. By the way I phrased the last sentence, you can see my bias. I know I will fail. I also know the gods of selfishness, greed, and exploitation will not win. I do believe Compassion, Love, and Mercy will. The fact is, “all the nations add up to simply nothing before him [God]—less than nothing is more like it. A minus.” (Isaiah 40.17)
Today is an opportunity for you and I to walk with experience (learning) and power (God). We can live in the moment, confident and hopeful. It is a wonderful perspective. It is also our choice.
