I like opinions. I do not always agree, if fact it is as likely that I will disagree as agree. I do not always find the exchange pleasant. If I am candid, it is much easier when everyone naturally agrees. I do not always understand the views of those around me, even if we have known each other for years. I usually think I am close to the truth. I know I come across as having even more confidence. Yet having someone take a stand is one of the aspects of a viable, functioning, and growing community that I hold closest to my heart. It is in my view, one of the highest gifts one can give others. This is assuming of course that one does it in the right way.
The fact I like opinions is one of the reasons I like being in New York. This city is full of very opinion people. The span of confident, full of clarity, and aggressive to the point of being pushy individuals defies comprehension. The fact that anyone can get along with a New Yorker, especially a New Yorker is incredible! When one finds New Yorkers working together, anything and everything is possible. You can see the results – incredible music, thought provoking art, and mysterious yet brilliant insights.
I listened to young music students inspiring each other on the subway and I knew I had listened to Hope. A friend showed me a new art piece hidden in a loft and I knew I had experienced Inspiration. A casual observation opened up a new way of looking at a wicked business problem. Each because someone held a view, stood up, and shared it with others.
I wonder if I am up to the challenge. Will I respond to others, take a stand, and share my view? Will I stand up to God? God’s challenge is as clear as the conundrums in any big city. “‘Set out your case for your gods,’ says God. ‘Bring your evidence,’ says the King of Jacob.” (Isaiah 41.21)
Yes God; yes.
