I arrived early for my squash game. I was a tired after a night spent sleeping on the flight from California to New York, but I was determined that I would not use this as an excuse. I was mentally exhausted after a fresh day in the New York’s trenches; my resolve said this reality was not going to affect my effort. Whatever I imagined, however I saw myself, I wasn’t prepared for the two practicing on the court before me.
Both players were in league I at best aspire to play in. What impressed me most wasn’t their shot making ability or control. I watched, stunned by their ability to play at an extremely high level without tiring. It was poetry in motion. Shot after shot, winners in any other setting, for extended periods. If my experience lasted just one rally, I would have walked away in simple awe. The images and memories burned themselves in for over thirty minutes, etching themselves in a way that I will not soon forget.
I wonder if I could imagine God on the squash court. Could God play like those players? How would Divinity’s stamina be after an extended rally with multiple winners? Does God take time to practice and get things right?
For those not into the game my questions may not make a lot of sense. They could seem like slightly crazy musings. Yet I watched two individuals play like the prophet’s description of God’s agents and I find myself inspired. “He won't tire out and quit. He won't be stopped until he's finished his work—to set things right on earth. Far-flung ocean islands wait expectantly for his teaching.” (Isaiah 42.4)
I walked onto the squash to play my match and found myself playing differently than I usually do. I played better, didn’t tire as easily, and in the end, won. I took the models, founds things that worked in my game, and put them into action. Yesterday I saw God’s engaged compassion in action. I can remember, learn and act. It is game time.
