I love watching the way people walk and talk from a distance. The immediate sounds are not there to confused and mislead. Everything is non-verbal. One listens, hears, and understands in the context of the body’s story. Individuals say things without knowing exactly what they are saying. Individuals talk from the heart, not the mind. Individuals tell more of the truth, unable to hide, shape, or control as they often do with their words.
I love watching but often argue about how others see my actions. I haven’t said that, have I? I didn’t deliver that message, did I? I couldn’t have wanted to say it in those words, perhaps I am denying what is in fact truth.
A number of writers and researchers today tell us that more of our communication occurs through non-verbal means than in words and sounds. Non-verbal has a higher level of truth and comes from a place closer to our heart. It is as if our bodies seek, live, and speak in truth. This happens at the same time as we are trying to manipulate how people see, hear, and understand us.
There is an alternative. God laid out the model. “God steps out like he means business. You can see he's primed for action. He shouts, announcing his arrival; he takes charge and his enemies fall into line.” (Isaiah 42.13) You can see God is all business. You feel the truthfulness of words and action because of the harmony of their consistency. God’s shouts are real and metaphoric – in action and in sound; power being fulfilled in the your live and mine, at a personal level and in our communities.
Today is an opportunity for us to bring words and actions together. Rather than just respond, we can be intentional. Instead of being passive, we can be active. Every word, action, and posture can reflective our aspirations.
I have a lot to say. I’m sure you do as well. We can tell our stories, in actions and in words. Today is the start of something wonderfully new, and old.
