I grew up knowing I was not going to inherit much money. The first reason was obvious; I did not grow up in a family with lots of idle cash. The second reason was the ongoing joke; ‘you will be lucky if you do not have debts to pay when we are gone’. The joke and reality of our family’s finances did not cause me worry; nobody was going to die, besides we had “stuff” others did not. I enjoyed the fantastic tree house, mini-bike (top speed under ten miles an hour), and push go-cart. Life was good, even if I was not going to inherit anything.
With time and the reality of life’s beginnings and ends more apparent, I have come to appreciate that I have been much more than money. At the top of the list of things I inherited are the following; an insatiable appetite to explore, learn, and experience, a wonder about life and what is immediately around me, and a joy in the relationships that give texture and color to my life.
My inheritance is a treasure I would not trade for anything else. I have and continue to be extremely fortunate. Yet in the midst of the opportunities I have, I realize there is still more. You and I share an inheritance that most never realize. We are children of God. We are each given access to everything that comes with being a full, complete, and unending member of Divinity’s family.
The potential is incredible. As we realize and accept what our Divine Father and Mother give, our response will tell the story. The words of those that proceed us give hint to our words; “This one will say, ‘I am God's,’ and another will go by the name Jacob; that one will write on his hand ‘God's property’—and be proud to be called Israel.” (Isaiah 44.5)
In the midst of life’s chaos and pain, I easily forget. Facing uncertainty, I am lost. Struggling against the odds, I faint. Today I will remember, treasure, and walk tall with God.
