In London the last person I would challenge to know where I am, going, or how to get there, is a cabby. London is confusing, with the hundreds of names and nuances for both large and small stretches of the different villages that make up the metropolitan area. How does one learn? How does one remember? Does the night’s darkness, or the confusion that comes from a hard London rainstorm, or the latest construction project confuse even the veterans? Candidly, I have never seen a London cabby rattled. They know where they are. They know where they are going. They are supremely confident they can provide an honest service to local and tourist alike.
I often act as if I am a London cabby. Are you trying to get from point A to B in Redlands? I may sound confident, yet Whitney is a far better expert. Are you interested in navigating the airport of your choice? If it is one of my favorites, I can help, yet there are people who know far more than I do. Does the prospect of visiting New York seem daunting? Again, I can help, but I easily admit that there are others far better than I am when it comes to a particular type of jazz music, choice of cuisine, or form of art. I may be good, but I have my limitations.
I wish I could be consistent with God. I find myself trying to fill the gaps. I know what is best in my life. I have a firm view on my view. I have fixed my priorities. “God, The Holy of Israel, Israel's Maker, says: ‘Do you question who or what I'm making? Are you telling me what I can or cannot do?’” (Isaiah 45.11) I mumble; the real answer is “yes”. I hesitate, only to realize that my bluff is out on full display.
God invites you and me to be share in the knowledge. It contains far more than London’s streets, it is the reach and work of Divinity in the here and now.
