I love intense, truth-filled music. I have come to realize that the source, style and genre of the music are far less important than the degree of open, transparent, soul honesty. The higher the degree the greater the potential exists for Hope. You may not discover a positive truth within, however unless the potential is there I am not sure the music has a point.
I found myself reflecting on the level of honesty in the music I find in music and musicians. It is hard to comment on recorded music except by extension of one’s personal experience with the musician. In person, everything changes. The setting, everything about the lighting, ambience, atmosphere, and relationships by those one is sharing the moment with, sets the frame. One’s vantage point – near, far, or even through the lens of a camera, further shapes what follows. While the senses are collecting the tangible and unseen, one begins to realize the truthfulness of the moment. In great moments, one experiences the touch of Hope through the artist giving directly from their heart. One may not understand how the phrasing, pitch, lyrics, emotions and music work together, yet one knows when the Spirit reaches out to touch their soul.
The contrast is equally true. Casual, frivolous music leaves one less filled. It is as if the process empties the soul. The nightmare begins even before one understands the process is underway. It is as if the ugly story plays out within the soul. “The god Bel falls down, god Nebo slumps. The no-god hunks of wood are loaded on mules and have to be hauled off, wearing out the poor mules—dead weight, burdens who can't bear burdens, hauled off to captivity.” (Isaiah 46.1, 2)
Today is an opportunity to hear and make great music. You do not need to be a skilled musician in order to convey truth. The key, then and now, is to let the Spirit fill you from within; telling your heart and others of love, compassion, and mercy. The sounds will be incredible, and hope filled.
