Whatever the cause, life can overwhelm any and every soul at some point. This is true for rich and poor, strong and weak, individuals at peace and those in the middle of total chaos. I find two things in life that change how I see what is going on around me as well as the load I carry.
First, my view pivots with my perception. My burdens never seem quite as large, heavy, or difficult when I appreciate the challenges others face. From the gray hairs, stress related strains on the body, and the absence of sleep, I know I have my challenges. Yet I do not find myself worrying about my next meal like the young woman on the subway was last night. I am in reasonably good health. When I see someone smiling, eyes filled with hope, while dealing with handicaps, life-threatening ailments, or overwhelming odds, I know I am extremely fortunate.
Second, my load shifts when others help. I am extremely fortunate to have friends and family in my life. Their support, often unconditional and undeserved, fundamentally changes my walk. They may not know I appreciate what they do. I know the truth of my life. I experience what each does in his or her way. I wish I was more articulate. I wish my actions always expressed my awareness of their gift, my appreciation, and the heart-felt debt that I am incurring.
On good days, I see beyond myself to the work others, including God take on so that I walk stronger with Hope. God reminds you and me of our reality; “Listen to me, family of Jacob, everyone that's left of the family of Israel. I've been carrying you on my back from the day you were born, and I'll keep on carrying you when you're old. I'll be there, bearing you when you're old and gray. I've done it and will keep on doing it, carrying you on my back, saving you.” (Isaiah 46.3, 4)
I hope to honor each by giving the same to those that share my steps.
