I am a big fan of tools. Tools are enablers in the best sense of the word. I like retro, hand, and power tools. Anything that has a functional purpose is interesting. The sense of knowing its history, understanding its purpose, and what makes two tools that are the same different is just the beginning! It is seizing the opportunity to use, experience, and then realize a result with the tool that really counts. I probably have more tools than I need. Yet it is with and in the tools that so many different possibilities are possible.
There are critical warnings that bear consideration. Having the latest gadget will not make you the best at anything. Working without commitment almost always guarantees a substandard result. Powerful tools in the hands of innocents are a dangerous combination.
Far too often, I find myself judging others by the tools at hand. Ironically, the best at any profession are the best simply because of the tools they use. It is the artist and not the brush that makes a difference. It is the insight, clarity, and presence to know what to do when that determines the outcome. It is the awareness of knowing when and how to act that shapes what follows. In short, tools help yet it is the knowledge of knowing what do and the commitment to see it realizes that really makes the difference.
I know the warnings and insight with my head but often I forget to connect these with my heart. God offers you and me a way of thinking, a set of principles and guides that are the most powerful tools we will ever use. God’s results are in; “calling that eagle, Cyrus, out of the east, from a far country the man I chose to help me. I've said it, and I'll most certainly do it. I've planned it, so it's as good as done.” (Isaiah 46.11) God has a plan, Divinity uses the tools at hand, and the results have and will continue. There is much to learn from the Master.
