I would have loved to be a fly on the wall. I wish I had seen the expressions, heard the hidden words between the lines, and had a change to ride the emotions flowing back and forth. The punch line, right up front of the conversation was this; “you are an idiot.”
It is important to have a bit of context. The conversation was between two friends, talking about an opportunity, trusting and knowing their relationships was still growing. The words were a candid expression of one person looking out for the best interest of the other. Two people, sharing life’s path for a time, gave and took the words in a spirit of trust. In this context, friends can and should be candid with each other, even blunt. Knowing both parties, I would be willing to pay serious money to have been there in person.
It is interesting to see the change. One person, trusted to be an insider, helping another. A relationship forming and growing because of trust, experience, and a hope filled future. With the dialogue, everything changes. Candid conversations occur. New thinking and vistas open up. Both discover new perspectives of hope.
God offers you and me the same type of dialogue. At times, it is blunt and candid, on both sides. We can and should be candid with God; expressing our anger, frustration, and uncertainties along with our joys, wonder, and surprise. God is already doing this with us; “Now listen to me: You're a hardheaded bunch and hard to help. I'm ready to help you right now. Deliverance is not a long-range plan. Salvation isn't on hold. I'm putting salvation to work in Zion now, and glory in Israel.” (Isaiah 46.12, 13)
Conversations can be direct. There is Hope within each moment of open dialogue. New opportunities rest in every experience. We can open the door and discover the ways God is already prepared. It is incredible. It also starts with being blunt; first with our self, then with God. Today begins with the blues and ends with rock and roll.
