One of the trivial opportunities on the Singapore Airlines sixteen hour plus flight is the eighty movies one can watch on demand. There is a wide range of genres with a language concentration in English, Chinese, and Hindi. I have rediscovered an enjoyment in watching Hindi movies because of their obvious plot lines, inherent ability (mandate) to include music and dance, and for great clich?s. One recent line had a humorous protagonist of the female lead always end his observation with the clich? “just imagine”. By the time the three-hour plus movie was half way through, I had fallen into the trap of imagining all the possible variations the plot line could take in a story that was already beyond anyone’s ability to believe. It was fun in a crazy I have nothing else to do kind of way.
I have long since forgotten the plot but the clich? continues to echo in my imagination. Just imagine what we could do if we worked together? Sure, we would have to struggle through our differences and frustrations, but just imagine! Granted we would have to forgive each other as we wrestle with the pain and hurt inflicted on us, but just imagine! I know this seems unbelievable, impossible, but just imagine.
Imagine a world where our mandate and opportunity was endless. Consider the possibilities of living in a community without exploitation and revenge. Dance with the chance to be a history maker.
At different times in my life, I let go of my tethers and released myself to the Spirit. The experience calls me on to do it again. God reminds me of your call and my own; “that's not a big enough job for my servant—just to recover the tribes of Jacob, merely to round up the strays of Israel. I'm setting you up as a light for the nations so that my salvation becomes global!” (Isaiah 49.6) Just imagine – compassion rules, mercy triumphs, and acceptance is the norm. We become the community God meant for us to be.
We can live our imagination.
