There is a singular benefit that I find comes with age; recognizing common sense. While I am not ignorant, I often forget, ignore the obvious. The difference time has given me is simply the ability to recognize the truth found in the ordinary. The obvious benefit is this; to those closest to me – I give a whole lot of latitude for their wisdom. I know they know more than I do. I believe they often see what I do not. I understand that my experience, travels, and steps may not show up in my actions, choices, or even preferences. I wish I had more common sense. Frankly, I do not. What I do have is the ability to recognize that more wisdom exists outside of me than in.
In many ways, I wish everyone around me recognized this truth. Candidly, it would help with my frustration levels! Why do men find it so difficult to solicit help from others when they are lost before they wander in the wilderness for a time? Why is it natural to try to do it on your own before asking others to engage as a team? Is there an explanation for the need we have to make each other feel good, especially about the relationships between ourselves, even though there is little evidence to support our attempts?
There is an alternative. First, start with the obvious. There are absolutes that transcend every human being, even Divinity. God has not, will not forget us. “Can a mother forget the infant at her breast, walk away from the baby she bore? But even if mothers forget, I'd never forget you—never.” (Isaiah 49.15) Second, take the first and continue on to the next conclusion. If God has not forgotten, then God is involved in some way, shape, or form. Take the time to reflect, struggle with what this means. Third, act on what these steps teach us.
This alternative will give each the opportunity to move into a different relationship, with life and the community we live. Remember, we are family.
