Normally, in any moment, the infinity pool at the apartment in Singapore is idyllic. The water is perfectly still. The edge of the pool endlessly disappears into the Singapore skyline. It looks extraordinarily inviting, and it is! In the warm, humid climate of Singapore, the water is fresh, cool, and inviting. It also, refreshes, energizes, and changes one perspective. The one catch is wind; winds change everything!
As I dipped my toes into the water, the wind swirled around my foot. Technically, I grasp the fundamentals involved – cooling, evaporation, and what happens when objects with different temperatures interact with each other. The simple conclusion that I was cold had legitimate roots! I was cold and it felt like my foot was freezing, even though I was in the tropics. My swim lasted less than five seconds. In simple words, it did not happen.
The morning dawned with quiet solitude. As I walked up to the pool, I wondered how much of yesterday’s icy experience would shape the present. Even as I hit the water, I knew everything was different. Nothing was the same as the past. Everything was new, waiting for my willingness and openness. My permission changed my world. The swim brought new energy and a fresh perspective. The water and endless edge nurtured a time of reflection. Whatever happened before was gone.
Bad things in life can be like that when we travel with God. Candidly, “the victims will be released before you know it. They're not going to die. They're not even going to go hungry.” (Isaiah 51.14) In the bigger scheme of things, everything has a context that will reflect truth.
Life’s winds can destroy. They can permanently alter individuals, relationships, and communities in ways that are beyond our understanding. Yet in the midst of it all, it does us well to remember. Winds eventually die. Winds, while a part of life, are not and do not define life. Our lives are less about the winds that force themselves on us than they are about our choices. My choice is Hope.
