I am on several distribution lists. Some are easy to understand. I belong to a particular company. I occupy a specific role. I want to stay in touch with a defined group of people. These are lists that I am on by choice or by being chosen or selected. There are also a few lists that I am on against my wishes. Spam and junk mail are at the top of pile of ones I do not want. Candidly I hate being on these lists, yet for reasons I do not fully understand, I have little or no control of how I got there.
As I look at the various lists around me, I find it interesting to see how different individuals react to God’s list. Am I on it? Are you on it? What about so and so? Are they really on the list? Many, myself included, seem to want God’s list to be very exclusive. Only the best can make it! When one comes across an invitation from God to those that do not qualify, all of our defenses go up. Say it cannot be true; God would never give “a call to the savage beasts: Come on the run. Come, devour, beast barbarians!” (Isaiah 56.9) Yet God did and does.
I am candidly not sure what I think about this. On one hand, I am glad that I am on God’s list. I am also filled with hope knowing that you are on the list as well. The obvious question is, but everyone? Why should those that do not deserve it be on the list? I know I do not qualify, or do I? What is the reason anyone makes the list?
The answer should fill you and I with unlimited, unending, and overflowing amounts of hope. We, you and I as well as everyone else, are on God’s list because we are human beings. We are Divinity’s kids. We are part of the Divine family. We did not choose, we were and are chosen.
Know we are on the list changes everything.
