Trying to see through life's haze is problematic, even on a clear day. I find myself staring out the window in the middle of a tropical monsoon. It is pouring! I know if I walk outside that I will find it wet, humid, and relatively warm. My head knows this even as my heart feels London's dank dampness, New York's cold winds, and Southern California's smell of rain with dust. It is hard to really know what is going on, even as I am certain what has, is, and will happen.
The confusion does not stop with a simple reflection in a storm. How do we react when our dreams are confronted with life's reality and uncertainty? What does one do when the people they love turn in a way we know is not in their best interests? Is there any answer to the confusion that is now a norm with the noise of images, sounds, and words flooding your life and mine?
It is hard to see clearly. It is as if in every situation we are asking ourselves the same metaphorical question; “What's that we see in the distance, a cloud on the horizon, like doves darkening the sky?” (Isaiah 60.8) Candidly, as much as I may want this situation to change, the opposite is more likely to be the norm.
We can do something with the uncertainty in our vision. We do not need to fly blind. We can act within what we can see. We can always act with faith in God's values of compassion, mercy, and community. This does not mean that we will never face tough choices. We will. Even in our darkness, we can exercise compassion. Even in our uncertainty, we can offer a sense of belonging to those around us. Even in our doubt, we can trust God and promises on the table.
The fear within will remain for a time. In my journey, it has already been present. I also know that I continue to be surprised with God's presence. Divinity lives within your life and mine.
