There is a reality linked to the virtual world in which many of us live. Even as we spend time with the web, emails, videoconference meetings, telephone conference calls, and in our imaginations, we are touching and changing the reality of our worlds. In my life, the line between the virtual world and reality has blurred to an extent that most of the time I wonder if I know what is real and what is merely part of my imagination. When I reach a conclusion, do I go back and verify my sources? Is the world I live in merely one of my creation or is it true reality?
I find that the biggest source of the gap between the virtual world that consumes most of my life and reality is “me”. I am the heart of the gap! As I examine and reflect over the lives around me, I am actually quite normal. It seems as if we like our virtual worlds! We love the picture we describe. We like our weaknesses because of the indulgences that often come with them. We are confident in our knowledge, no matter how weak the foundation we have built it on.
There are special people in my life that challenge my virtual world. They call me to face my uncertainties. They question the data and logic that supports my assumptions and conclusions. They call me to a true reality.
God questions to you and me challenge our virtual worlds. Even as we try not to listen, the questions sit, waiting to be answered. “'When you say, 'the altar of God is not important anymore; worship of God is no longer a priority,' that's defiling. And when you offer worthless animals for sacrifices in worship, animals that you're trying to get rid of-blind and sick and crippled animals-isn't that defiling? Try a trick like that with your banker or your senator-how far do you think it will get you?' God-of-the-Angel-Armies asks you.” (Malachi 1.7, 8)
Today's dawn is a fresh reality. I am going to fill mine with truth.
