Mirrors are a gateway into something different, unusual, and often mind altering. They can be used for self, in reflection, and as a tool for change. Despite being available and useful for many different things, a mirror is often a simple single purpose vehicle. They should one what one already knows.
I always assumed I would grow up to be wiser than I was in grade school. I knew that I would never make the mistakes of my father and grandfather. I was sure that I would always see things clearly. The traps for the generations from the forties and fifties would be ancient history by the time I became an adult. My generation would blaze new trails, create new opportunities, and establish clear paths of wisdom.
Almost forty years later, if I am wiser, it is not by much. I have repeated the sins of the generations before me. I often find myself struggling to see and have a vision. I have stumbled in the same potholes as those before me. The trails I walk are familiar ones. Wisdom is as illusive now as it was then. Yet, I still think I see things differently.
My blindness is hereditary. Generations long before me have been unwilling to look at life with transparency and honesty. It is often difficult to listen, really listen with one's heart to the truth. Young men reminded their generation of the truth, a verbal mirror for reflection and insight. “Jesus the Nazarene, a man thoroughly accredited by God to you-the miracles and wonders and signs that God did through him are common knowledge-this Jesus, following the deliberate and well-thought-out plan of God, was betrayed by men who took the law into their own hands, and was handed over to you. And you pinned him to a cross and killed him.” (Acts 2.22b-25) It was difficult to see.
We have a long history what habit momentum. We also have today's dawn and the moment at hand. Both can be firsts. Each is a turning point. We can see clearly with God.
