“Are we there yet?”
I have grown to love that question. It has not always been true. For much of my life, as I remember my childhood, on through the early days of parenting, the question was always associated with frustration and annoyance. I wanted to be somewhere! Why were we not already there? I thought Dad was a driver. Does Mom need to drive as slow as a bullock cart? Why do the kids need to be this impatient? I wish they could see that I am driving as fast I can or should. Somehow, across the years I have come to see the question differently.
Are we there yet? Said another way, I want to be somewhere with you. Heard in a different context, we have a great destination I cannot wait to get to! For some, it is a “so much is possible” question implying “can I help?”
For many, the question is never quite answered. When does an organization arrive at its destination? When is a team an ultimate team? When are relationships about living and nurturing? Then answer to each is found in the output of the group, team, and relationship. We have arrived when “all the believers lived in a wonderful harmony, holding everything in common.” (Acts 2.44)
The answer to the question is, ironically, not so much a destination is an engaged way of living. We will never be there; we are there. It is not about arriving, it is about striving.
Are we there yet? Welcome to an invitation to participate in what it means to be alive! Are you ready to dialogue? Open to the chance of walking with another? Are you ready to be surprised, awed, and touched?
Everything is possible when we open up our souls to God and each other. Anything can and does happen when we let the ordinary events of life become windows into the impossible.
In today's dawn, we can reach beyond ourselves and touch God. Someday we will arrive; until then, the question can open doors. Are we there yet?
