Idiocy

We are all idiots.  It is not my quote.  This is a Doctor's quote while addressing a large group of parents.  You are an idiot.  My mother and farther are idiots.  I am an idiot.  Said another way, we are human and we make mistakes.  The question is never an “if”, but merely a when. The irony is that as frequently as we often make mistakes is how consistently we deny that we do. 
Mistakes show up in the oddest places.  It can be as simple as taking the long way to the office when I am in a hurry.  Rarely do I remember my decision making process.  Usually I find myself simply smiling at my pride paying the cost for being late.  It may seem dumb to even consider reflecting on the types of mistakes we make.  Why not just learn and leave it?  How about just looking at the outcome instead of decision itself?  Is there a need to be critical about how we got to a destination?
Sometimes the situations look innocent.  When a crippled beggar “saw Peter and John about to enter the Temple, he asked for a handout.”  (Acts 3.4)  He had no idea how big his mistake could have been.  Life as he knew it was pivoting in that moment. 
Much of my life looks innocent.  With more gray hairs, I realize that nothing in life is as innocent as it seems.  Outcomes have far too many variables beyond our ability to control.  In the hard reality of living, the only thing we can control is the choices and decisions we make.  When I look at this I have come to realize that why, how, and when I make a decision is at the heart of my learning!  Everything pivots in that moment.  Without taking the time, my idiot quotient dramatically skyrockets.  My mistakes are at the front end, not the outcome.  It is here that my blindness of who and what I am becomes the greatest obstacle.  I am an idiot.  God willing, I can be less of one.
