Politicians everywhere seem to live by the motto that the ends justify the means. Anything can be said in the heat of the campaign. Outcomes from everyday decisions must be carefully manipulated so that the desired outcomes find their birth. Nothing can be left to chance.
As I catch the news of yet another “don't worry about what I am saying”, we will work things out, I wonder if word(s) can be trusted. Do actions mean what they appear to mean? Can we trust those that we think we should be able to trust? Frequently, life teaches us that we cannot. Even the institutions that should be beyond reproach often find themselves under righteous indictment.
I know time tells a very different story. When one looks at a life where the words track with the action, where the values are reflected in the relationships, and where the priorities play out in a consistent harmony, one discovers truth, hope, and a child of God walking with Divinity's hand in his/hers. I find that I come away with a sense that I have been in the presence of God. It is not as if I have put the individuals involved on a pedestal. I am cognizant that they are very human. Mistakes can and will follow moments with Divinity. Yet, it is the presence of Truth that is real that infuses my life with Hope.
Outcomes are not easily controlled or predicted. I am not sure they matter in the scheme of life. What matters is the moment at hand. Will we courageously do the “right” thing no matter how others will respond? Can we step forward with conviction, humbly and willingly letting God direct our steps? Are we willing to let go of the outcome? One person did and for a cripple that touched his hand, “in an instant his feet and ankles became firm. He jumped to his feet and walked.” (Acts 3.8) We may not have a visible miracle with each choice but the miracle within your heart and mine will be even more stunning.
