There are several individuals in my life at turning points. Whatever his or her choice will be, and it is ultimately a personal choice that is their own, it will shape the path of their life for years to come. In each case, I wish I could help them take the “right” choice. I can, though I know the best way for me to help is to be present, to model freedom, and to pray. Others can tell them what is right. Others can correct and be in their face. It is not something I sense God calling me to do, not do I feel qualified. In virtually every case, it is point in their life that I need to cheer and support.
It is easy, well maybe not that easy, to confess that this does not come easy for me. I want to tell them what is right. I want to give them no options. I want to push them into the breach, knowing that the path chosen will be the best. I also know that if I do these things, the path will not be his or her own. They must choose. The reasons for the choices must be their own. In the exercising of this freedom, each will discover what it means to be fully human, responsible, and in the end accountable.
It is sadly ironic that as easy as I see their decision points, I am blissfully ignorant of my own. With the dawn, comes a fresh moment to set a new course. In being in the present, we have a blank canvas to write the course of our lives on. Even in the chaos of failure, we can take decisions of truth that chart new paths towards community and the wonder of truth filled relationships. Each moment is a turning point.
“Now it's time to change your ways! Turn to face God so he can wipe away your sins, pour out showers of blessing to refresh you, and send you the Messiah he prepared for you, namely, Jesus.” (Acts 3.19, 20)
