In the process of launching a new service, we have struggled to deal with the chaos, long hours, and unending changes that ultimately bring greater understanding. Couple this with the departure of colleagues from the early days and the impending arrival of new team members, and one has the natural recipe for confusion. Where are we going? What is the plan? Who is doing what?
The questions continue to grow even as we push to build new capabilities and strengthen our business disciplines. It many ways the story that is unfolding in a natural way that reflects my life. I start out focused, confident that I know where I am going. Life unfolds in way I could never anticipate, often do not readily understand, and in the end I push forward, struggling to hold onto my priorities and values. With time, the process often evolves into a narrative that I am comfortable in dealing with. I know how to get through the day. I think I understand the relationships in my life and reach out to nurture each as I can. Yet, in the end I find myself wandering in a way that I know should tell me that I have no idea of where I am or what direction I am currently heading.
It is an indictment that I find myself struggling to accept. I used to understand, so why am I lost. I had the knowledge and a plan, so my directions should be clear. I have asked for directions along the way, so where does my confusion come from?
In every situation, I find myself coming back to an old piece of advice from generations past. Unless one reconnects, regularly, openly, and with a humbled spirit, one will get and stayed lost. One must revisit and rebirth one's mission. One must re-launch, metaphorically following the direction to “Go to the Temple and take your stand. Tell the people everything there is to say about this Life.” (Acts 5.19) One must retell the story and reconnect. Being lost is rarely a singular event.
