The scene could repeat itself in any major cities around the world; solo dancers and groups gathering for an audition. Three judges were seated at a table in front of the stage. Each was a local celebrity for reasons hidden except for those with insider knowledge. As the emcee began to pump up the crowd, everyone knew what was going to unfold. The only unknowns were the crowd's reaction to each act and the judge's verdict.
The first set was solo dancers under the age of eleven. Initially the crowd's reaction was muted. In direct contrast to the emcee silently dancing along with the act in support beside the stage, the audience silently stared. I wondered if they were ever going to come alive. A precocious seven year old with a shimmering outfit came on stage. As the audience woke, the next act in camouflage caught the best and worst of the audience's imagination! “At that point they went wild, a rioting mob of catcalls and whistles and invective.” (Acts 7.54)
The reaction of the audience was just one voice responding to the dancers. In the end, while important to some, it did not determine which group went through to the next round.
You and I are often judged. The reactions and feedback are obvious; carrying more weight than one is willing to admit. It is easy to one to be caught up with this jury. Even as they are a loud voice, they are not the only voice. Often, they are not even a voice that matters. With the whispers of different mentors echoing in my mind, let me offer the following.
First, know the reasons for your actions. Do not paint for someone else, do it for yourself. Be intentionally a person of your choosing.
Second, always remember “who” is the final judge. Peers, bosses, and even friends, each important in their context, are not the answer; Divinity is.
Third, never let a setback in the present dictate a change in your direction. Life is full of the unexpected. Each moment is an opportunity.
